How To Regrip A Pickleball Paddle

How To Regrip A Pickleball Paddle or Replace an Overgrip

Regripping your pickleball paddles may seem intimidating, but do it once and you're basically a professional! There are a few things you need to know before getting started, so let’s get into it and get a better grip on the subject.

First and foremost, here are some items you may need:

  1. Your replacement grip or an overgrip
  2. Scissors
  3. Finishing tape (or electrical tape)

Once you've acquired the three items above, simply follow this simple six-step process or watch the how-to video below for visual guidance.

Step 1:

It’s important to understand whether you have a replacement grip or an overgrip. A replacement grip is thicker and is applied directly to the raw handle of the paddle. Replacement grips are generally more expensive, last longer, and are preferred if you like a thinner grip feel. An overgrip is thinner and is placed over the original or replacement grip. Overgrips are great to build up the grip of your paddle size. Also, since they’re relatively inexpensive, they’re a good option for someone that sweats a lot or likes to replace their grips often.

Step 2:

If you will be applying an overgrip to your paddle, make sure to leave the original or replacement grip on the paddle. If you remove the replacement grip, it will not be easy to re-apply, as the sticky part on the inside of the grip may have become less sticky. On its own, an overgrip is too thin and does not have enough cushion to be placed directly on the paddle’s handle.

Step 3:

Remove the grip from the packaging and remove the plastic from the inside and outside of the grip.

Step 4:

Start with the tapered part of the grip and place it so that it is slightly overlapping the bottom of the handle. The tape-like adhesive on the back will help hold the grip in place. Begin wrapping the paddle, slightly overlapping the grip as you go.

Step 5:

If you have extra grip leftover, move from the top-down and cut the excess grip off at a 45-degree angle so the grip fits correctly into the remaining space.

Step 6:

The final step is to secure your grip to the paddle using finishing tape, whether that tape came with the grip or you use electrical tape. Wrap the tape around the grip so it’s half on the paddle and half on the grip so that the tape secures the grip to the paddle itself. You’ll want to wrap the tape in the same direction you have been wrapping your grip, this makes it easier to finish and keep the grip in the correct position.
